| Patrick's great
grandfather, Joseph Akerman came from England and along with his new bride Martha Clay who arrived on the bride ship "Robert Lowe"
to settle in the Burgoyne/Fulford Valley in the 1860's. Patrick's grandfather Ted, married Ellen Gyves a half native Indian girl whose family was from the Cowichan Indian Band. The Akerman family has lived in this area ever since. Primarily farmers and woodsmen they helped settle Salt Spring Island. Today Patrick's father Bob, has built a museum as a tribute to the early settlers. There you will find West Coast Native Indian artifacts and photographs of some of the early pioneers and settlers who contributed to the rich history of this beautiful Island. |
